Mercury/Tohatsu
The Mercury/Tohatsu is a shared platform built by Tohatsu. While overall specifications are identical there are a couple cosmetic and one functional difference.
Both motors are built as 3-cylinder battery-less electronically controlled fuel injection EFI motors with a displacement of 526 cc (32.09 cu. in.) and a bore x stroke of 61 x 60 mm (2.4 x 2.36 in). Full Throttle RPM Range is 5000-6000 RPM with a gear ratio of 1.92:1 (13/27). Their Short Shaft Tiller weighs 157 pounds and Long Shaft Power Trim and Tilt Tiller model comes in at 185 pounds. Alternator output 15 Amps (180 Watts). Both motors are available with optional gas-assist manual trim like the Honda.
Cosmetics are where the motors start to differ. Each motor has a different cowling design and paint scheme. The biggest difference is the tiller arm. The Mercury carries on with the traditional multi-function tiller control. Mercury’s tiller design has six major functions including shifting in the grip throttle much like the old style controls. Tohatsu uses a separate shift control lever mounted to the front of the motor.
